You can quickly add items to a takeoff to provide more detailed material and cost information on your reports and estimates.

What to Know

  • You can add or remove an item from a takeoff at any time.
(This will change the information on your estimates and reports.)

  • You can add as many items as you need to a takeoff.

  • You can add custom and/or pre-built items from any or all the item catalogs (My Items, Quick Start Items, Stack Items and BNi Items).

  • You can add material AND labor items to the same takeoff.

  • You can add items AND assemblies to the same takeoff.

See below for instructions on how to Add an Item to a Takeoff or Remove an item from a Takeoff.

Add an Item to a Takeoff

NOTE: To add an item to a takeoff, the item unit of measure must match the unit of measure output for the takeoff measurement type.* For example, an item with a lin ft unit of measure can be added to a takeoff with a linear measurement type, but cannot be added to a takeoff with a count measurement type.

*See How to Master Measurement Types and Working with Assembly Formulas for more info on what data each takeoff measurement type provides.

  1. Click on the takeoff where you want to add an item.

  2. Scroll down to find Items and Assemblies on the left panel. (Any items and assemblies already added to the takeoff will be listed above the + Add items and assemblies button.)

  3. Click the + Add items and assemblies button.

  4. Click the Items tab.

  5. Perform a search or click on folders for expanded list view to locate the item(s) you want to add.

  6. Click the green + next to each item you want to add.

  7. Click the green Add Items button.

The item(s) will now populate in Item Reports and the Material and Labor Estimate.

TIP: You can add your takeoff (with the added items included) to the library to create a template for re-use on future projects. See How to Create a Takeoff Template Library.

Remove an Item from a Takeoff

  1. Click on the takeoff from which you want to remove an item.

  2. Scroll down to find Items and Assemblies on the left panel.

  3. Find the item you want to remove from the list of added items and assemblies shown above the + Add items and assemblies button.

  4. Click the red trash can icon to the right of the item name.

  5. Click the Delete button.

The item will no longer appear on Item Reports or the Material and Labor Estimate for this takeoff.

Next Steps

After you have added all the items and assemblies that you need to the takeoff, the next steps are to review data in reports, then create an estimate and proposal. If you've added BNi Items, you can apply national or regional cost data to your estimate.
